June Gardening Jobs
Josephine ByrneShare
Summer is officially coming this month- yay!!
With even longer, warmer days, and with flowers blooming ever so gloriously, there's ample more opportunity for you to get out into the garden, with plenty of gardening jobs to complete.
Check out our list of June gardening jobs below!
Tomato Plants
If you've previously grown tomato plants indoors, now's the time to bring them outside. Should any of them show signs of not pollinating properly just yet, be sure to remove the yellow flower clusters and water them with a watering can and rose.
When transporting them outside, choose a sheltered and sunny spot in your garden. Encourage healthy growth by securing the plants to bamboo canes. Water your plants daily and feed them every week with a liquid fertiliser.

Bedding and Hanging Baskets
Got gaps in your borders? Keen to add some hanging baskets to your garden? Invest in Summer bedding plants!
Always opt for a mixture of upright and trailing varieties, like lobelias, petunias and fuchsias. Doing so will help you create a space that is bursting with vibrant and potent colours during the Summer. And who doesn't want that?
When planting, be sure to use multi-purpose compost, topping your bedding up frequently with an all purpose feed.
Keep them well-watered during the first month, and regularly water them after, especially during hotter weather. It is recommended that you water your containers and baskets daily, while your borders once a week (making sure to be thorough). Choose either early morning or early evening to water, targeting the soil specifically, rather than the leaves. This will stop damage being done to your plants.
Seed Sowing
June = Salad Seed Sowing Time! Y'all ready?
Picking a sunny spot in your garden, clear your soil (preferably fertile) of weeds and debris beforehand. Remove any stones too.
Use a hand trowel to create shallow trenches and then plant your seeds thinly and evenly along the trenches. Make sure to cover the seeds with soil, firming it down and gently watering the soil after.

Shrub Pruning
Shrubs, such as Ceanothus, will have finished flowering by now, and so it's time to crack on with pruning. Pruning will enable next year's flowers to develop before the Summer ends (exciting times, they are a coming!).
Make sure to get rid of ruined/dead shoots, returning to the shrub's original point or ground level. Get rid of any excessive stems, cutting back to ground level. This will keep the bush open, and so, prevent any congestion issues.
Strawberry Runners
Any strawberry plants with long shoots, or 'runners', can be secured to the ground with a loop so that they root and produce more plants for the upcoming season.
Always have ready fresh straw which can keep your plants off the ground and shield them from the rain (which we never seem to have enough of… weird, right?).
Roses
Check and remove any mildew present on your roses' leaves… that stuff's never pretty.
Also, cut off any faded flowers so that your roses can produce a fresh crop. Once you've finished deadheading, use a rose feed to ensure they stay healthy afterwards.

Lawn Care
Mow your lawn weekly so it thickens up.
Feed your lawn regularly so it can grow greener, and combat weeds and moss more effectively.
Weed Hoeing
To prevent a weed infestation in your garden, it's important to regularly hoe the area.
Using the hoe's blade, cut any weeds just below the soil surface so that the roots are exposed to the sun. Apply then a push/pull motion to cut off the top growth of weeds. Leave the weeds on the surface to dry out and die.
Be sure to hoe your garden on a sunny day, so that any disturbed soil can form a sort of 'dust mulch', enabling weeds to dry out faster.
