Caring For Your Fresh Cut Christmas Tree

Caring For Your Fresh Cut Christmas Tree

Emily Hadland

Choosing a fresh-cut Christmas tree for your home this year? Here's a few tips to help you buy the best fresh tree you can find, and make sure it's lasts the whole festive season!

Buy a top quality, fresh tree.

We only sell premium grade trees here at Langton Greenhouse, so you're guaranteed to get a good one! All of our cut trees are British grown Nordmann Fir, known for their bright green, flexible needles that shed very little and have strong branches to support all your decorations.

Chop the bottom off your tree.

Chopping around an inch off the bottom gets rid of any hardened sap that may have formed since harvesting, and helps the tree absorb more water. We have an electric saw to hand at the garden centre, so we can quickly do this for you once you've chosen you tree.

Water your tree regularly

Think of your tree like a cut flower. Fresh-cut Christmas trees can drink up to 2 litres of water a day, so keep the trunk submerged for healthy, glossy needles. We have some great leak-proof stands for sale to keep your tree happy! Trees at this time of year are naturally out in the cold air so it's equally important to position your tree in a cooler room, around 4 feet away from direct heat sources like fireplaces and radiators.

Let you tree aclimatise

Before you decorate your tree, gently tap the trunk on the floor a few times to get rid of any loose needles. Don’t worry if your tree drops a few more needles than you expect, this is completely normal, and won't stop your tree from looking beautiful!
Position your tree it in it's stand, then let it sit for a few hours in your chosen room so the branches and foliage can aclimatise, making sure it looks it's best!

Make sure you inspect your Christmas lights before you put them on the tree! This will prevent you having to disrupt the tree any more and having to take them off again if they're not working correctly.

Decorate your Christmas Tree!

Now for the fun bit! Add the lights first, followed by tinsel and garlands if you're using them. Try to place your best decorations first, in places where they catch the eye, then fill in the spaces with the others, keeping larger decorations closer to the bottom of the tree to give a balanced look.

Following these steps is the best way to ensure you have a long lasting, beautiful Christmas tree that you can enjoy for the whole festive season.

We hope these tips have given you a helping hand if you've chosen a fresh cut tree this year and wish all of our customers a very Merry Christmas!
